This 2-day intensive practical course is designed for professionals working in social services, healthcare, and community support roles. The course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to recognise and effectively respond to coercive control in domestic and family violence situations, with a specific focus on the new laws in New South Wales (NSW).
Day 1: Understanding Coercive Control
Topic 1: Introduction to Coercive Control

Definition and characteristics of coercive control.
Difference between coercive control and other forms of domestic violence.
Understanding the psychological impact on victims.

Define coercive control and differentiate it from other forms of abuse.

Overview of the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Coercive Control) Act 2022.
Specific legal definitions and behaviours considered coercive control under the new law.
Penalties and legal consequences for perpetrators.

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework surrounding coercive control in NSW.
Identify behaviours that constitute coercive control under the new law.
Topic 3: Patterns of Abuse and Control

Coordinating with law enforcement, legal services, and community organisations.

This 2-day intensive practical course, takes a person-centred approach and trauma informed care to provide essential training for professionals in mental health, social services, allied health sectors and community mental health care. Our course will equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills to recognise and respond to coercive control. This is a form of psychological abuse often found in domestic violence situations.
